Sciatica TreatmentSciatica Treatment

Sciatic pain can be constant and excruciating and the longer it persists the more difficult it can be to treat so fast effective treatment is essential.

Our aim with sciatica treatment initially is to relive the pain and to give you advice as to what to do or avoid at home so promoting a faster recovery.

Even mild symptoms can become much worse if not promptly treated so if you have any signs of sciatic pain then call us or book an appointment online for immediate relief from the symptoms.

What is Sciatica?

Sciatica simply means the sciatic nerve, the largest nerve in the body that runs down the back of the thigh is irritated by being squashed or pinched by something- usually in the low back (lumbar spine) or the pelvis. This may be a disc bulge, inflamed spinal joint or joints or muscles in the pelvis. As well as pain there may be pins and needles, numbness or strange sensations running down the leg as the nerve sends odd messages to the brain.

Sciatica Treatment with Physiotherapy

We initially assess you with some questions and an examination but if the pain is severe this may be limited. Be assured the aim of our treatment is to reduce and NOT aggravate your pain. A more thorough examination may be delayed until your pain is better. Our priority initially with sciatica treatment is to reduce the pain and enable you to move more easily. This helps the muscles and joints in your back and legs to stretch and loosen and speed your recovery

The treatment may include mobilising (moving) the spinal joints in very specific positions to relieve the pressure on the sciatic nerve. Also specialist massage techniques reduce muscle spasms or trigger points (knots in the muscles) in the spine or buttock to reduce pressure on the nerve and allow the muscles to stretch.

Continuing Treatment

Once the pain is under control your physiotherapist will focus on the cause of your sciatica by continuing your manual therapy and giving you the knowledge to address the lifestyle factors that make you more susceptible to sciatica. You then have the power to change things at home and work and prevent this painful condition re occurring. If you are suffering and think you may need sciatica treatment, then please get in contact with us.
