Prior to qualifying as a physiotherapist Monica trained in Canada as a kinesiologist, obtaining a first class honours degree in Human Kinetics in 2010 at the University of Guelph in Ontario.
Kinesiology is the study and analysis of movement. It focuses on achieving proper alignment and therefore biomechanics in order to eliminate pain and dysfunction through specific exercise prescription.
Monica explains: ‘When someone is injured or in pain it is vital that they are thoroughly and expertly assessed before any exercise is prescribed. Time is then taken to explain and practise the exercises under close and regular supervision as even slight errors can make the problem worse or even produce a new one.’
As many of our patients report from previous experiences being given a generic sheet of exercises for example ‘back pain’ without proper assessment or diagnosis is at best ineffective and at worse dangerous and painful.
Monica worked for 3 years as a kinesiologist in the private sector in Canada helping people be free of pain and return to their normal activities using specific and specialised exercises and advice.
Working closely alongside the physiotherapy team she soon realised that she wanted to extend her knowledge of musculoskeletal problems and so came to the UK to train as a physiotherapist, gaining an MSc in Physiotherapy from Brunel University.
Monica says that by combining her two areas of expertise of physiotherapy and kinesiology she can ‘improve a patient’s quality of life and has the dedication, motivation, and qualifications to provide excellent service for each of her patients to achieve their goal.’
She enjoys travelling and has backpacked extensively in Asia, Europe, and South America and finds her traveling experiences have taught her about different cultures, improving her communication and social skills and helping her further connect with and understand her clients’ goals and ambitions.
Originally from Guatemala Monica speaks Spanish and English and has a basic understanding of Portuguese.
She is looking forward to settling in London and enjoying another new cultural experience!
Vincenzo Masullo MCSP
Vincenzo qualified as physiotherapy in Italy in 2012 where he soon realised his interest and passion was in musculoskeletal and neurological conditions.
Recognising the importance of a holistic approach to clients’ health and wellbeing he opened his own multi-disciplinary rehabilitation centre in collaboration with an osteopath and a nutritionist. As part of the team he developed rehabilitation programmes and managed the preparation of other clients for athletic and sporting events.
He says:‘I am deeply empathetic to a client’s needs and am therefore able to communicate sensitively with clients and their carers to maximise their rehabilitation and recovery’.
Keen to develop his skills further Vincenzo spent time treating private clients in Sydney, Australia working in a sports therapy clinic and benefitting from seeing another country’s approach to therapy and private healthcare.
Not content with being a fully qualified Physiotherapist Vincenzo moved to London to begin intensive training at the British School of Osteopathy where he is currently studying a Master’s Degree in Osteopathy.
Vincenzo has found the osteopathic techniques and skills he is learning enhance and develop his therapy even further and help him get the best results and a fast recovery from his patients.
He is especially interested in athletics and providing personal training and rehabilitation to athletes.
When he is not working or studying Vincenzo enjoys cycling, swimming and tennis and perhaps predictably as an Italian he loves food and cooking!
