Monica Garcia MSc Physiotherapy – BSc with Major in Human Kinetics
Prior to qualifying as a physiotherapist Monica trained in Canada as a kinesiologist, obtaining a first class honours degree in Human Kinetics in 2010 at the University of Guelph in Ontario.
Kinesiology is the study and analysis of movement. It focuses on achieving proper alignment and therefore biomechanics in order to eliminate pain and dysfunction through specific exercise prescription.
Monica explains: ‘When someone is injured or in pain it is vital that they are thoroughly and expertly assessed before any exercise is prescribed. Time is then taken to explain and practise the exercises under close and regular supervision as even slight errors can make the problem worse or even produce a new one.’
As many of our patients report from previous experiences being given a generic sheet of exercises for example ‘back pain’ without proper assessment or diagnosis is at best ineffective and at worse dangerous and painful.
Monica worked for 3 years as a kinesiologist in the private sector in Canada helping people be free of pain and return to their normal activities using specific and specialised exercises and advice.
Working closely alongside the physiotherapy team she soon realised that she wanted to extend her knowledge of musculoskeletal problems and so came to the UK to train as a physiotherapist, gaining an MSc in Physiotherapy from Brunel University.
Monica says that by combining her two areas of expertise of physiotherapy and kinesiology she can ‘improve a patient’s quality of life and has the dedication, motivation, and qualifications to provide excellent service for each of her patients to achieve their goal.’
She enjoys travelling and has backpacked extensively in Asia, Europe, and South America and finds her traveling experiences have taught her about different cultures, improving her communication and social skills and helping her further connect with and understand her clients’ goals and ambitions.
Originally from Guatemala Monica speaks Spanish and English and has a basic understanding of Portuguese.
She is looking forward to settling in London and enjoying another new cultural experience!
Monica is also trained in pregnancy massage and offers this relaxing and beneficial experience at our Leyton clinic.
